Description of narrative structure and use of film language

In this section, you need to describe the style of your sequence.  

You should cover:

§  A young girl named Ella is sitting down in a Library studying. Then there will be a straight cut to an unknown person holding a large amount of books passing by Ella. We will not see the face of the person walking passed her. It will then straight cut to a number of books from the pile the mysterious person was holding dropping onto the floor. Ella attempts to give back the books but as she turns around there is a long shot of no one behind her in the library.

§  We will then have a close up of the books and Ella’s hand picking them up. This then straight cut to Ella coming back up and putting the books on the table. She looks at all the book and picks up a more distinguished, old looking, rustic. She begins to flip through the book and then we hear an off screen diegetic sound of her phone. She picks it up and then this changes to on screen diegetic because we can now see the phone. There is now an extreme close up of the phone. We see a text from her mum telling her to come home.

§  Straight cut to Ella packing her things into her bag. She leaves the book and we see a close up of the book still on the table this shallow focus and Ella leaving at the back.

§  Fade to next scene of her getting home and her unpacking the bags in her living. She takes out the book from her bag. Close up of her face looking confused weather she left the book.

§  She then starts reading the book and we see cross fades of her in different positions reading the book to show us that she has been reading for a long time. She gets to a page where we then hear a voiceover of her reading the curse which will talk about her life disappearing and being another person.

§  She leaves her living room looking tired as if she’s ready to go to her room. She passes by in her a corridor a mirror and does not see her reflection. The camera is still there as she walks back and sees her reflection looking scared and reckless she awkwardly walks away.

§  Straight cut to next scene of her bedroom. She goes into her bed and starts to sleep. We see fades and dissolves of Ella sleeping restless like she is having nightmares and images of a scary ghoul in her nightmares attacking and scaring her while we hear on screen diegetic sounds of her screaming ‘NO! NO!’

§  Fade to the next morning and she wakes up in a panic by on screen diegetic sounds of her alarm and then a phone call from her friend telling her to meet up. While we hear the off screen diegetic sound of her friend on the phone.

§  Straight cut to next scene of her meeting her friend. She begins to act strange and weird and fidgety.

§  She starts an on screen diegetic conversation with her friend. We will make sure to use the 360 degree rule when they are speaking. We then see a medium shot and then suddenly the ghost from her dream appears next to her friend. Medium shot of Ella and her screaming and freaking out. Her friend asks her what is going on and she says theirs someone next to her.  Her friend Anastasia looks and sees nothing. Anastasia then asks her what is going on with her. Medium shot of Ella shouting and screaming and telling the ghost to go away. Long shot of Ella running away while she is still freaking out. The camera the straight cuts to Anastasia calling Ella’s name and then going after her. Straight cut to a medium long shot of Ella running to her house. It then pans to her walking to her front of the door. Then a close up of her trying to open the door with her hands. We then see a close up of her face and another close up of the ghosts face appearing right beside her. This then changes to a point of view shot from Ella’s perspective as the ghost comes closer and closer with a range of straight cuts moving the ghost until it becomes an extreme close up of the ghost trying to possess her. This then fades into black and then we see the same medium long shot but of Anastasia walking towards the door. The next shot will be a match on match of her hand touching the door as she notices the door is still open. She calls out for Ella and then enters the house. This shot will be angled behind her and then a straight cut to the camera facing in front of her while she is walking up the stairs in a medium shot. Anastasia then opens Ella’s bedroom door in the front and this cuts to a shot behind Ella where we do not see her face. Off Ella’s shoulders is Anastasia’s face looking shocked as we see Ella holding a knife and the ghost Cyrus in her. This will then be a shallow focus from Anastasias face to Ella’s body.
