The film reviews for The Ring by Empire magazine starts off with the summary of the plot. It doesn’t really show the authors own opinions in this section and just gives a brief outline without telling the readers the ending of the film. In high contrast to this roger Ebert’s review on the ring starts off with his own opinion of how the film altogether went stating that ‘rarely has a more serious effort produced a less serious result than in "The Ring…"’. However Variety’s opening of the review summarises the film as well as giving a judgement as well in bold which contrasts with the rest the review making it more noticeable for the reader. It mentions how the film is a ‘stylish Hollywood remake of the Japanese horror sensation that unfortunately has little personality of its own’ and still includes the plot by talking about ‘a bizarre videotape that brings death to those who watch it’.
After this Variety goes on to mention how different it as from the original version and who made that film by telling us who the directors is and the novel it derived from. Similar Empire magazine also mentions its predecessor’s success of the film and how this remake cannot compare to the original. ‘If you've seen the Japanese original …Put simply, this isn't a patch on Hideo Nakata's sublime, low-budget, 1998 horror movie.’ Ebert’s article carries on from his previous statement and still talks about how ‘finally you'd rather just give it a pass than sit through one more tedious flashback.’ Different from the other two reviews the writer then gives a summary of the plot and follows it with mentions Hideo Nakata original version of the film.
Ebert then discusses about the actors and actresses and talks about her acting ability in her last film which gives us an idea of how she will perform in this film. The writer then concludes with talking about the ending of the film and how it makes people ‘think "The Ring" is going to end, and it doesn't.’ The last sentence ends on a positive and talks about how the audience are left thinking about the film.
Variety likewise continues on with the storyline and a talk about director Gore Verbinski and writer Ehren Kruger added onto the film and also mentions the protagonist of this film Naomi watts previous film appearance in "Mulholland Drive,” and how she differs in this. Unlike the two reviews ‘Empire magazine’ has a verdict section where the writer tells us of his opinion of the film on a whole.
