Poster Analysis - The Grudge

The Genre of The Grudge is communicated through the appearance of the character by jet black hair covering the face of the character in the poster. The one eye shows that the character is mysterious and doesn’t want its identity to be shown just yet, the audience knows this because the face on the poster isn’t evident it’s a first glance look of what the character would look like. The poster is dark and gloomy and doesn’t give off a positive representation of the film but shows a dark negative side to the films purpose [lighting]. The poster doesn’t really tell the audience much about the character on the poster. It is evident that the identity of the character is still yet to be exploited to the audience to build up bigger suspense for the movie. This shows that the narrative is an open minded narrative as it doesn’t really have a conclusion and just by the posters features the audience doesn’t really get a strong understanding of the context. The title of the film is The Grudge which highlights the idea that the film is going to involve a lot of hatred and despise throughout the movie as the title is The Grudge which suggest that someone or something is going to hold a grudge towards someone else. Also the title of the film is in red font which suggest that it could be to represent blood or the blood that will shed during this movie. The unique selling point (USP) of the poster is the actress who stars in the movie. As Sarah Michelle Gellar is a famous actress this will attract a large numbered audience to watch this film. The tagline for this film is “It never forgives. It never forgets”. This highlights the idea that the ‘It’ is a ruthless character, from the line ‘it never forgives’ shows that it will unless chaos and disaster upon the people who have upset it. The line ‘it never forgets’ shows themes such as escapism as the main character could be running from this ‘It’ because it never forgets and never forgives. The representation is a negative stereotypical of what curses are and is portrayed to be a vicious count of events during this film. The target audience for this film would be from the ages of 16-24 as this is the most viewed ages in the world.
